Winter can be grueling for a variety of reasons. It’s cold. It’s dark. It snows.
But then again, some people like that. They love the chill in the air, the long, starry nights, and the magical white landscapes left after a snowstorm.
But there’s one little thing that happens in winter that everyone hates: chapped, dry, flaky lips.
Luckily, there are steps you can take to keep your lips happy and healthy, even during the coldest parts of the year. After all, when the weather changes, you have to switch up your skin care a bit to account for the changes in humidity, temperature, and sunlight.
And just like you have to take special care of your skin in winter, you also have to take care of your lips. These simple tricks will keep your lips looking and feeling soft and plush even on the bitterest of cold days.
Check them out below and never feel shy about rocking red lipstick in the winter again!
1. Put On Lip Balm Before Washing Your Face
Your facial cleanser might be drying out your lips, especially if it’s for oilier skin types.
To protect your lips from getting over-dried, apply a lip balm before washing your face.
2. Use Almond Oil
Almond oil is super-moisturizing, and it’s also full of Vitamins A and E. Apply it to your lips nightly for a deep and nourishing conditioner.
3. Invest In A Humidifier
Heating will dry out your air — and your skin. A humidifier kept on at night will keep your skin hydrated.
If you don’t have one, holding your face over some steaming water once a day will do the same thing. Just be careful with boiling water.
4. Cucumbers Are Your Friends
Cucumber slices aren’t just for relieving puffiness. A slice on dry, chapped, and sore lips will relieve and hydrate them.
Simply cut a thin slice and hold it to your lips for about five minutes to soothe them.
5. Exfoliate Your Lips
To safely get rid of rough skin on your lips, try a lip exfoliator.
Remember, the skin on your lips is more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face, so a regular facial exfoliator may be too harsh.
If you have super-sensitive lips, or if you have any cuts, give them a gentle scrub with a soft, clean toothbrush and water.
6. Don’t Lick
Licking dry lips seems like it would help, but it actually makes things worse.
Enzymes in your saliva, which are used to break down food, will actually dry out your skin even faster. So don’t do it!
7. Breathe Through Your Nose
This seems like a no-brainer, but if you’re engaged in physical activity, especially outside, it’s easy to start panting through your mouth. And that dries out your lips.
If you know you’re going to be gulping air, put on a lot of moisturizer first.
8. Don’t Pick
If you have flaky skin on your lips, picking at it will only make it worse, and can lead to cuts, bleeding, and soreness.
If you have to get rid of it, buff it gently away with your exfoliator or a toothbrush, and apply moisturizer immediately after.
9. Use Sunblock
Sun damage dries out skin, and your lips are no exception. If you’re going to be outside, opt for a lip balm with SPF included.
If your lips are already burned, SPF can irritate them, though. So in that case, opt for aloe vera instead to soothe them.
10. Beeswax Is Your Friend, Too
A lip balm with beeswax is great way to protect your lips and keep them smooth and soft. It serves as a barrier between your skin and the elements.
11. Drink Plenty Of Water
If your body is hydrated inside, it will be hydrated outside, too. Drinking plenty of water isn’t just good for your lips, either, but for your whole body.
12. Watch What You Eat
If your lips are chapped, certain foods can irritate them further. Foods like citrus fruits, acidic or salty foods, and spicy sauces should be avoided if your lips are sensitive.
13. Bundle Up
Wrap a scarf around your nose and mouth and button up your collar when out in the cold and wind. This will protect your skin from the harsh weather, and it will prevent your nose from getting dry, too.
14. Pull Out The Big Guns
If your lips are really chapped, get some lip balm with ceramides. These special chemicals are super-hydrating and restore lost moisture while providing a protective layer.
15. Go Shiny
If you wear makeup, choose a shiny lipstick or gloss over a matte to disguise rough, chapped lips. For extra smoothness, use a lip conditioner before applying lipstick.
